Collin Morikawa is setting his sights on a competitive return to the golf course at the upcoming Valero Texas Open. The two-time major champion, who recently dealt with a back issue, discussed his recovery during an interview with ESPN’s Marty Smith, stating that the process has been progressing positively.
"I feel really positive for the Masters, which is the following week," said Morikawa, reflecting on his optimism about his health as he prepares for a crucial part of the PGA Tour calendar. His eyes are not just on the Valero Texas Open, but also on the prestigious Masters Tournament scheduled shortly after.
Morikawa's back injury forced him to withdraw from the Players Championship earlier this month, a decision that came after he only completed a single hole in his opening round. He recalled that at the 11th tee, he attempted a full-speed practice swing but chose to back off, ultimately deciding to withdraw due to discomfort.
As the current world No. 8, Morikawa has had a season marked by success, including three top-10 finishes and a notable victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. However, his injury has temporarily slowed his momentum. Since his withdrawal, he has not participated in any competitive rounds.
Additionally, Morikawa’s situation has impacted his participation in team events. He is part of the Los Angeles Golf Club team within the TGL league, which faced off against the Jupiter Links in finals this week. Unfortunately, due to his ongoing recovery, Morikawa was unable to compete with his teammates.
As he gears up for his return, Morikawa remains focused on both the immediate challenge of the Valero Texas Open and the Masters on the horizon. His commitment to recovery and positivity regarding his performance are markers of his resilience as a competitor in the sport. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he fares upon his return to action next week.
