The 2026 Cognizant Classic, held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, has seen fierce competition as the second round unfolded under gusty winds. After 36 holes, Austin Smotherman stands out with a commanding three-shot advantage, having scored an overall 11 under par.
"It's definitely a challenge out there with the wind, but I'm excited with where my game is at," said Smotherman. The 31-year-old from Northern California shot a 2-under 69 in his second round, following up on a spectacular opening round of 62.
Smotherman's journey on the second day saw an uneven performance; he began with a birdie at the 10th hole but faced setbacks with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12. Despite these hiccups, he regained momentum through two quick birdies on the final holes of the front nine and continued to assert his position.
As the dust settled on Friday, Smotherman reflected, "I think maintaining the lead is crucial, especially going into the weekend." His determination was clear as he approached the last holes, eventually closing the day with a 3-shot lead over Taylor Moore, who finished the day at 8 under par.
The cut for the weekend proved challenging as well, with the line set firmly at even par. This meant any players above that threshold would not be returning for the final rounds. In total, 67 players earned the right to continue competing.
Shane Lowry, regarded as one of the favorites entering the tournament, made waves during the second round after a modest 1-under 70 on Thursday. By 3:40 p.m. ET Friday, he surged into the top echelons of the leaderboard, reaching 6 under for the tournament. “I’m just focusing on playing my game and capitalizing on birdie opportunities,” said Lowry.
In a notable moment, Jimmy Stanger impressed spectators with an astonishing hole-out from 151 yards on the par-4 14th, which elevated his score from 1 under to 3 under. However, after experiencing a double bogey on 17, he found himself needing a strong finish to ensure his place in the weekend rounds. "I just need to focus and not let the momentum slip away," he commented after finishing.
Young talent Blades Brown also generated buzz throughout the day. The 18-year-old made headlines during last month's American Express but faced a challenging start. After opening with a bogey, Brown found his rhythm with four consecutive birdies spanning holes 3 to 6, bringing him close to the cutline with a 1 over score, just one shot short of qualification. “I want to show what I can do out here among some of the best,” he stated resolutely.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Brooks Koepka, a five-time major champion, managed to rally back with a solid 66 on Friday. Having made only his second cut in three attempts since returning to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf, Koepka voiced his ambitions candidly: “If I'm out here to try to make cuts, I'm probably done.” His perspective indicates a focus on larger aspirations beyond just securing a place in tournaments.
The 2026 Cognizant Classic continues to build excitement as players prepare for the final rounds, where strategies will undoubtedly be tested by both the course conditions and the stiff competition fueling the narrative of this year’s event. As the weekend approaches, all eyes will be on Smotherman to see if he can maintain his lead against challengers eager to take their shot at the title.
