The Valspar Championship field continues to shrink as another player succumbed to injury during the second round at Innisbrook Resort.
PGA Tour Communications confirmed that Brian Campbell withdrew from the tournament after sustaining a neck injury while navigating the notorious closing holes at the Copperhead Course. The injury occurred during what has become a challenging week for the field, with Campbell joining six other professionals who have already pulled out.
Campbell's withdrawal came after an aggressive approach to the water-guarded finishing holes. The 33-year-old found water three times at the par-4 16th hole alone, as he attempted to attack pins over hazards on a course nicknamed "the Snake Pit" for its demanding layout and strategic penalties.
The strain from these aggressive swings may have contributed to the cervical and upper thoracic muscle injury that ended his week. Neither Campbell nor tour officials have provided specific details about the severity of the neck problem.
This latest setback continues a troubling pattern for the two-time PGA Tour winner, whose recent seasons have been derailed by physical issues. His 2025 campaign was particularly affected by a persistent shoulder injury that forced an early withdrawal from the Travelers Championship.
"I probably would have had a solid week that week and then that carried into Palm Springs, still feeling like absolutely so weak and kind of beat myself up just to make the cut. Then, going to Torrey Pines, I was just gassed. So that was just not going to happen," Campbell said when reflecting on his injury-plagued 2025 season.
The shoulder problems significantly impacted his power and endurance throughout last year. Campbell made two mid-event withdrawals, missed 11 cuts in 24 starts, though he did manage to capture two victories despite the physical limitations.
"The weeks where the rough is five inches deep, I'm like, 'I don't have the strength to get through this right now,'" Campbell explained. "I think you have to look at it in a realistic way and not kind of beat yourself up if it doesn't set up for you."
This season has brought little improvement for Campbell's results. He had made only two cuts in seven starts before the Valspar Championship, with finishes of T54 at the WM Phoenix Open and T78 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am representing his best showings.
The timing of this neck injury raises concerns about Campbell's immediate playing schedule and overall health management. With another physical setback, the tour veteran faces the prospect of missing additional tournaments while recovering.
Campbell's situation highlights the physical demands of professional golf and the cumulative impact of repetitive stress injuries. His withdrawal adds to growing concerns about player health and the challenging conditions at courses like Copperhead, where aggressive play often comes with significant physical and scoring risks.
The extent of Campbell's neck injury and his expected return timeline remain unclear, leaving questions about his participation in upcoming events.
