HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Matt Fitzpatrick demonstrated his prowess at the RBC Heritage, carding a remarkable bogey-free 8-under 63. This stellar round puts him at the forefront of the PGA Tour event held at the well-loved Harbour Town Golf Links, where he previously celebrated victory in 2023.
Fitzpatrick, returning to a venue filled with fond memories from childhood family vacations, managed to surprise himself, especially with an outstanding birdie on the par-3 14th hole. His 8-iron went awry, striking a tree and bouncing back to the fringe, but Fitzpatrick capitalized on the break with a stunning 33-foot putt.
"You need those in golf," Fitzpatrick remarked. "It's not always going to go your way for 72 holes. Nice to get the break and then nice to take advantage of it."
After a victory at the Valspar Championship in March, Fitzpatrick faced challenges with his putter at the Masters, where he finished tied for 18th. Struggling with his putting statistics, ranked 94th in Strokes Gained: Putting, he made adjustments this week with his coach Phil Kenyon. The effort proved fruitful as he now ranks third in putting among the 82 competitors this week.

"I was frustrated and disappointed," Fitzpatrick stated about his Masters performance. "We touched on a few things and just feel like it's given me a little bit more freedom, more than anything."
Sporting a Harbour Town Golf Links headcover resembling the iconic red-and-white lighthouse behind the 18th green, Fitzpatrick shared a light moment during a practice round with Keegan Bradley about the family’s choice of vacation destination in the area.
“It was a great spot,” Fitzpatrick recalled, noting that the family, preferring budget-friendly options, visited the island three or four times during his childhood.
As he continues to impress in the tournament, Fitzpatrick now sits at a remarkable 14-under-par 128, leading Scottie Scheffler by a significant margin. Scheffler, ranked number one in the world, produced a solid performance with a bogey-free 67, but he remains trailing in his pursuit of Fitzpatrick's lead.
"Not something I was thinking about," Fitzpatrick quipped when asked if he enjoyed playing in front of Scheffler.
Reflecting on his past triumph at the RBC Heritage, where he finished 17 under and needed a playoff to secure victory, Fitzpatrick recognizes the competitive spirit required to win again. He acknowledges that to wear the coveted tartan jacket once more, he might need an even lower score.

In attendance this week are Fitzpatrick's parents and his wife, who recently announced their expectation of their first child later this year. Despite the personal milestones, Fitzpatrick remains focused on his performance, aiming to add another victory to his record at Harbour Town.
With the weekend ahead, Fitzpatrick's outstanding performance raises the stakes in the tournament. Fans and players alike are reminded of the intensity of competition at the RBC Heritage as Fitzpatrick seeks to defend his title against a strong field, including major challenges from seasoned players like Scheffler.
As the tournament progresses, fans will surely be watching Fitzpatrick, hoping to see if he can sustain his momentum and again claim the tartan jacket that symbolizes victory at one of the PGA Tour's signature events.
