Hyo Joo Kim weathered a Sunday storm from Nelly Korda to capture the Fortinet Founders Cup title, completing a wire-to-wire victory at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club that showcased the LPGA Tour's elite talent. The South Korean star's final-round 73 proved just enough to hold off the charging world No. 2, finishing at 16-under par for her second Founders Cup triumph.
Kim's commanding eight-stroke lead after 54 holes nearly vanished as Korda mounted an electrifying comeback, drawing even by the 10th hole. The American's aggressive play set up a gripping back-nine duel that kept fans on edge until the final putt dropped. "I don't think I was necessarily shaken up or my emotions were all over the place," said Kim. "I was just trying to keep my focus on my shots and what I was doing."
Korda, fresh off ending a 14-month winless streak at the Tournament of Champions, arrived at the first tee riding high after her brother Sebastian's upset victory over Carlos Alcaraz in Miami. She carried that momentum onto the course, carding five birdies through 10 holes to erase Kim's substantial advantage. "I felt great all day," said Korda. "I just kind of made one stupid mistake and that was 17."
The par-3 17th proved decisive as Korda's three-putt bogey handed Kim the opening she needed. The 28-year-old Korean responded with a spectacular chip from behind the green that stopped inches from the cup, preserving her slim lead heading to the final hole. Though Kim bogeyed the 18th, Korda couldn't capitalize, settling for second place at 15-under.
Kim's victory marked her eighth career LPGA title and first since turning 30, making her one of few players to win in their teens, twenties, and thirties. The win also validated LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler's decision to move the event to Sharon Heights, which drew rave reviews from players and packed galleries throughout the week.
"I actually really like Nelly's swings out of all the LPGA players," said Kim. "Instead of even watching a video, I was able to see it real life today, and I think I was just able to learn a lot today."
The tournament sets up an intriguing storyline as both players head to Arizona, where Kim will defend her Ford Championship title and Korda looks to build on her resurgent form. Their thrilling duel at Sharon Heights served as a perfect showcase for women's golf, delivering the kind of dramatic finish that could propel both toward standout seasons.
