MENLO PARK, Calif. — Hyo Joo Kim extended her commanding position at the Fortinet Founders Cup on Friday, doubling her overnight lead to four strokes with a resilient second-round performance at Sharon Heights Golf Club.

The South Korean star closed her afternoon round with a clutch 6-foot birdie putt on the par-3 eighth hole, capping a determined rally after some early struggles. Kim followed up Thursday's spectacular 9-under 63 — highlighted by a hole-out eagle on the 18th — with a solid 70 to reach 11-under par.

"The golf course is a bit hard," Kim said. "The tee shots are hard to play and the shape of the course is a little tricky. I try my best to just try to do what I need to do."

Kim's round started rocky when she played the back nine first, dropping shots on the 11th and 17th holes. However, the world No. 8 showed her championship mettle by bouncing back with birdies on four of her final seven holes, including gains on 18, 1, 3, and 8.

Mexico's Gabby Lopez holds second place at 7-under after carding a morning 70. Lopez managed three front-nine birdies but gave one back on the par-4 16th hole.

World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul and former world No. 1 Nelly Korda are tied for third at 6-under, both making significant moves in opposite directions. Thitikul rebounded brilliantly from an opening 72 with an afternoon 66, overcoming an early bogey with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch.

"You have to be on the fairway first," Thitikul said. "Find the fairway. The rough was rough."

Korda, playing in her first event since winning the season opener in Florida, posted a morning 68 with late birdies on the seventh and eighth holes. The American star opted to skip the recent Asia swing but appears ready to make an immediate impact upon her return.

"It's tricky. You really have to shape it out here," Korda said. "Some of the trees are a little bit intimidating and the greens are tough, too. Not only are they really undulated, but sometimes they're a little bit harder to read, too."

The challenging tree-lined layout at Sharon Heights is clearly testing the field's best players. Several other contenders remain within striking distance at 6-under, including Minjee Lee (70), Aditi Ashok (66), Karis Davidson (68), Hye-Jin Choi (70), and Jin Hee Im (72).

Lee had perhaps the most frustrating finish, closing with a bogey after making four consecutive birdies. Despite the disappointing end, she remained optimistic about her position.

"A little bit of things to clean up, but I think I'm in a pretty nice position going into the weekend," Lee said.

For Kim, this tournament holds special significance. She captured the 2015 Founders Cup in Phoenix for the second of her seven LPGA Tour victories, a win that launched her professional career.

"It's been so long," Kim said about the 2015 victory. "I think I won my rookie year. It was an unforgettable memory because it was my first win as a LPGA member."

The tournament honors the 13 founders of the LPGA and has moved locations since its 2011 inception in Arizona. This year's edition has attracted eight of the world's top 10 players and kicks off a four-tournament Western swing leading up to the season's first major championship.

Kim enters the weekend as the defending champion for next week's Ford Championship at Wild Horse Pass in Arizona, coming off a strong third-place finish last month in Thailand. With her four-shot cushion, she'll look to add another Founders Cup title to her resume when play resumes Saturday.
