American golfer Jordan Gumberg delivered a clutch performance under pressure on Sunday, securing his second European Tour victory at the Hainan Classic in China. The 30-year-old managed a final-round 70 after executing a crucial up-and-down par save on the 18th hole to fend off Spanish challenger Jorge Campillo.
The victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Gumberg, whose European Tour career was hanging by a thread just months ago. His previous win came in South Africa earlier in 2024, but it was a dramatic finish late last season that set up this moment of triumph.
Gumberg's European Tour status was in jeopardy heading into the final stages of the 2024 season. However, he produced a miraculous eagle hole-out on the final hole of the Genesis Championship in South Korea, a shot that proved pivotal in securing his playing privileges for 2026 by moving him into the top 115 in the Race to Dubai standings.
"After the finish of last year, to be standing on the podium again and holding a trophy is unreal," said Gumberg following his victory. "It's incredible."
The Arizona graduate, who was runner-up to Jon Rahm in the 2016 Pac-12 Championship during his college career, had to withstand late pressure from Campillo on Sunday. The Spanish veteran closed with a 71 and created genuine scoring opportunities over the final three holes, but each birdie attempt narrowly missed the target.
The tournament also showcased emerging talent, with 17-year-old Chinese golfer Zhou Yanhan making a strong impression. The teenager, who recently competed in the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour, finished with a solid 69 to secure a tie for third place.
Joining Zhou in the third-place tie were Adrian Otaegui of Spain, who fired a tournament-low 64 in the final round, and England's Marcus Armitage, who matched Zhou's closing 69.
Gumberg's victory represents more than just another trophy—it validates his decision to continue grinding on the European Tour after his near-miss with losing his card. The win should provide significant momentum as he looks to build on his breakthrough season and establish himself as a consistent force on the international stage.
