South Korean star Hyo Joo Kim delivered another impressive round at the Fortinet Founders Cup on Saturday, carding a 6-under 66 to preserve her commanding five-shot lead heading into the final day at tree-lined Sharon Heights Golf Club in Menlo Park, California.
The world No. 8 now sits at 17-under 199 after three rounds, with defending world No. 1 Nelly Korda her closest pursuer at 12-under following her own bogey-free 66.
Kim's round began spectacularly with an exceptional front nine that left even the veteran player amazed by her own performance.
"The start up to hole 6, I believe, was unbelievable golf and I can't even believe it," Kim said. "I had a lot of birdies and eagle, too. But I did also have some bogeys I shouldn't have done. The start felt like almost a game."
The 30-year-old Korean collected four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole during her opening six-hole stretch, playing that span in 6-under before her momentum was briefly halted with a bogey on the par-5 seventh.
The former champion, who captured this title in 2015 in Phoenix for the second of her seven LPGA Tour victories, narrowly missed extending her lead further when she left a 15-foot birdie attempt just short on the par-3 17th. She concluded her round with a par on the par-5 18th after finding the left rough off the tee.
Meanwhile, Korda mounted her own charge with a flawless round that included key birdies on holes 16 and 18. The American star, who skipped the recent Asia swing after winning the season opener in Florida, expressed satisfaction with her clean scorecard.
"It's nice to have a clean scorecard wherever you play," Korda said. "Doesn't matter. With kind of how tough it is off the tee and into the greens, just really happy with my round today."
Kim enters the final round with confidence, having established her lead early in the week with a brilliant opening-round 63 that featured a hole-out eagle on the eighth hole. She extended her advantage to four shots after Friday's second round.
"I've been in the lead, so I want to finish tomorrow well," Kim said.
The chase pack features Ruixin Liu of China and Mexico's Gaby Lopez, both positioned at 11-under. Liu matched Kim's early fireworks with an eagle of her own on the fifth hole en route to a 66, while Lopez posted a solid 68 despite playing in the pressure-packed final group alongside Kim.
The tournament honors the 13 founders of the LPGA and has attracted eight of the world's top 10 players. Originally launched in Arizona in 2011, the event kicks off a crucial four-tournament West Coast stretch leading up to the season's first major championship.
Kim, coming off a strong third-place finish in Thailand last month, will also defend her title next week in Arizona as she seeks to add to her impressive LPGA Tour resume.
