Nelly Korda continued her exceptional play at the Ford Championship on Friday, carding a seven-under-par 65 to establish a commanding two-shot lead at the tournament's halfway point in Phoenix.
The American star's second-round performance at Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail course represented the lowest 36-hole total of her LPGA Tour career, positioning her perfectly for another weekend charge. Despite the tougher afternoon conditions that typically challenge players, Korda maintained her stellar form from Thursday's opening round.
"I have left a couple shots out there at the end," Korda said. "But I'm playing really solid golf, and when I do make a mistake, I try not go let it faze me too much."
Korda's only blemish came late in her round when she missed a two-foot birdie attempt on the par-5 17th hole, a miscue that prevented her from extending her advantage even further. However, her overall display showcased the consistent ball-striking and putting prowess that has made her one of the tour's premier talents.
Sitting at 16-under 128, Korda holds a two-shot cushion over defending champion Hyo Joo Kim, setting up yet another compelling weekend battle between these two elite competitors. Kim, who captured last week's Founders Cup by edging Korda in dramatic fashion, bounced back from early mistakes to post a 69 after her opening-round 61.
The rivalry between these players has become one of the tour's most compelling storylines. Kim's victory last week came after Korda missed a crucial short putt on the 17th hole Sunday, denying the American a second consecutive victory to open the season.
"Just getting sick of each other now," Korda said with a laugh. "Yeah, she's playing such solid golf. At the end of the day that's something that motivates me to want to stay with her at that level. We're just going back and forth, so it's nice. At the end of the day we're competitors, but we are very friendly. I've always enjoyed playing with her. I'm always mesmerized by her putting."
Saturday's third round will mark the fourth consecutive round these two stars have played together, creating an intriguing psychological dynamic as they prepare for another potential head-to-head showdown.
Three shots behind the leaders sits a group including former world number one Lydia Ko, who couldn't replicate her spectacular opening-round 60. The New Zealander struggled with her putting touch in Friday's afternoon conditions, managing only a 71 that left her tied with Jenny Bae (65) and Minami Katsu (66).
"I just didn't really hole many putts today," Ko said. "It's obviously harder to get closer to the pins just playing in the afternoon and the greens being a little firmer. I think I struggled with a couple of the short ones. ... But that's golf, right? I can't control everything. Yesterday was I think more of the surprise I think just shooting a score like that."
Despite her frustration, Ko remained optimistic about her weekend chances. "I feel like my game is trending in the right direction," she said.
The tournament has featured remarkably low scoring, particularly during the morning rounds when greens conditions proved more receptive. The quality of play was so exceptional that the cut line fell at five-under-par 135, eliminating several notable players including Women's British Open champion Miyu Yamashita and Lexi Thompson, who was making her first start of the 2026 season.
Among the notable performers was 17-year-old amateur Asterisk Talley, who fired a 65 to position herself six shots behind at 10-under. Talley will travel to Augusta National next week to compete in the Augusta National Women's Amateur, where she nearly claimed victory last year.
Korda's recent form has been exceptional, capturing the season opener in Florida before the event was shortened to 54 holes due to severe weather conditions. After skipping the Asia swing, she finished runner-up to Kim at the Founders Cup, setting the stage for this weekend's rematch.
"I'm really happy where my game is at now," Korda said.
With ideal scoring conditions expected to continue at Whirlwind Golf Club, the weekend rounds promise fireworks as Korda seeks to capture her second victory of the young season while Kim attempts to defend her Phoenix title and extend her recent dominance over her American rival.
