Scotland's Kelsey Macdonald delivered a spectacular first-round performance at the Australian WPGA Championship, shooting a course record-breaking seven-under-par 64 to seize the lead at Sanctuary Cove.

The 35-year-old from Inverness overcame an early setback with a remarkable recovery that included six birdies and a dramatic eagle finish. Despite dropping a shot at the opening hole, Macdonald quickly found her rhythm on the Queensland course.

"Well, the first hole wasn't that great! So I had nothing to lose from then on," said Macdonald, who has been competing in Australia for three months after earning a WPGA Tour of Australasia card.

Macdonald's round featured contrasting halves - she went out in 35 strokes but stormed home with a birdie-eagle finish that brought her back in just 29. The closing surge helped her establish a one-shot advantage heading into the second round.

"I just gave myself opportunities, and it was nice to finish the way I did. I've been in Australia since 2 January, taking advantage of the great weather," Macdonald explained.

The extended stay Down Under has clearly paid dividends for the Scottish golfer, who revealed the stark contrast in conditions from her homeland. "When I left Scotland it was minus seven degrees so it has been a great opportunity to keep playing," said Macdonald.

Hot on her heels in joint second place are Australia's Hannah Green and England's Charlotte Heath, both sitting one shot back at six-under-par. Green brings strong recent form to the tournament, having claimed victory at the Australian Open just last week.

Heath, a 24-year-old rookie who graduated from the LET Access Series, matched Macdonald's early struggles with an opening bogey but responded with seven birdies throughout her round. The Curtis Cup veteran felt at home on the Sanctuary Cove layout.

"It's quite Florida-esque here and I'm based in Florida now, so it felt quite comfortable to me with the Bermuda grass and [hitting] into the grain," said Heath.

Four players share fourth place at five-under-par, including England's Meghan MacLaren, who enters this week with confidence after finishing runner-up at the Australian Women's Classic at Magenta Shores two weeks ago.

The leaderboard also features Czech Republic's Lucie Vachova, Switzerland's Virginie Knecht, and Indonesia's Karis Yoko, all tied at five-under.

Further down the standings, Northern Ireland's Amelia Wilson sits at three-under-par, while Wales is represented by Lydia Thompson and Danielle Harry at two-under.

Macdonald's course record-breaking performance sets up an intriguing battle as the field prepares for Friday's second round. With several players within striking distance and Green's local knowledge adding another dynamic, the stage is set for compelling competition as the tournament progresses.
