Matt Fitzpatrick finally broke through for his first PGA Tour victory in nearly three years, claiming a dramatic one-shot win at the 2026 Valspar Championship on Sunday.
The English golfer overcame a three-shot deficit entering the final round, firing a 3-under 68 to finish at 11-under par and edge David Lipsky by one stroke at Innisbrook Resort outside Tampa, Florida.
Fitzpatrick's victory comes just one week after he fell short at The Players Championship, where he mounted a strong challenge before ultimately finishing behind Cameron Young.
"This time, Fitzpatrick was able to hold off David Lipsky in the group behind him, earning a comeback victory," according to tournament reports. The win marks his first PGA Tour triumph since the 2023 RBC Heritage.
Sungjae Im, who had led after each of the first three rounds, struggled mightily in the final round with a 2-over 74. The South Korean golfer posted four bogeys across his first eight holes, effectively ending his chances for victory.
Fitzpatrick seized control of the tournament with a crucial 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole, which moved him into the solo lead at 10-under par. The putt proved to be a turning point in what had been a scrappy battle among several contenders.
Lipsky quickly answered with a birdie of his own on the par-5 14th hole in the group behind, setting up a tense finish through Innisbrook's challenging closing stretch.
Both players navigated the difficult 16th and 17th holes with pars, though each had birdie opportunities inside 15 feet on the par-3 17th that they couldn't convert.
The tournament was ultimately decided on the 18th hole, where Fitzpatrick threaded his drive into the narrow fairway before hitting his approach shot to 14 feet below the hole. He then drained the crucial birdie putt to reach 11-under and claim the victory.
Lipsky, playing in the group behind, drove into the rough and could only manage par on 18, leaving him one shot short of forcing a playoff.
Xander Schauffele tied for fourth at 8-under following a strong 6-under 65 on Sunday, though he'll likely rue missed opportunities earlier in the week that prevented him from being in better position to capitalize on the leaders' struggles.
The victory represents a significant milestone for Fitzpatrick, who endured a lean 2024 season and slow start to 2025 before finding his form again. His win at Innisbrook affirms his status as one of the tour's elite players and provides crucial momentum heading into the heart of the 2026 season.
Fitzpatrick will look to build on this breakthrough as the PGA Tour continues with several high-profile events on the horizon, while Im will aim to bounce back from his disappointing final-round collapse.
