Brooks Koepka has returned to the PGA Tour, and Tiger Woods believes this move significantly enhances the golfing landscape. Woods, a 15-time major champion, commented on Koepka’s decision during a recent press conference, emphasizing that it is "a win for everyone."
Koepka, who enjoyed considerable success on the tour, departed from LIV Golf last month, citing a desire for more family time. The 35-year-old's departure did not go unnoticed; his re-entry into the PGA Tour prompted officials to adapt rules by introducing a Returning Member Programme after he sought reinstatement.
Woods acknowledges that the situation has been complex, but he is optimistic about the future. "There are opinions from both sides. We are not going to satisfy everyone, but the whole idea is to make our tour better than it was," said Woods. "With Brooks’ addition to the (PGA) Tour, it does. It makes it a better place to play."
According to Woods, Koepka's comeback will not only reinvigorate the competition but also financially benefit existing players. "Now with players who have earned equity, and there are four more years of potential earning of equity for these players, the fact that they own the (PGA) Tour, if Brooks plays, it puts more money in their pocket. It is a win for everyone," he explained.
Woods also expressed that bringing in a player of Koepka's caliber adds value to the entire tour. "Having another world-class player that these guys are going to try and beat is what the fans demanded," he noted. According to Woods, fan engagement was a crucial aspect of discussions around Koepka's return, affirming, "That is what the fans wanted for our fan initiative program, and I think we have addressed that."
However, not all former LIV Golf players are rushing back to the PGA Tour. Bryson DeChambeau, another star who has enjoyed a successful career, has confirmed his commitment to LIV Golf through the end of 2026 and expressed no immediate plans to follow Koepka. "I’m excited about this year," DeChambeau remarked at a LIV Golf captains’ press conference.
Commenting on Koepka’s exit from LIV, DeChambeau said, "I had no idea, no idea that that would happen. No idea what the penalties would even be. Right now I’ve got a contract. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do at LIV Golf this year."
Meanwhile, Woods is focusing on his own recovery after undergoing his seventh back surgery in October. "I am moving up to short irons, so that’s about it. I need a little bit more than that to be able to play here," Woods stated, sharing a glimpse into his rehabilitation journey.
He added, "At my speed right now, I could probably play the Stinger hole. Just kind of roll it off the tee, but no, I am progressing, which is nice. I am getting there and getting stronger. It is just one of those things where it just takes so much time for the bone to heal and the bone to set."
