Rory McIlroy’s recent triumph at the Masters should be a cause for celebration, but instead, it has ignited a debate about fairness in the sport. Following his second consecutive win, some critics alleged that McIlroy was taking advantage of his status as defending champion to gain an edge over competitors.
In response to these accusations, four-time PGA Tour winner Kevin Kisner came to McIlroy's defense during an appearance on the Fore Play podcast. "I thought it was the dumbest argument I’ve ever seen in my life,” Kisner remarked. He pointed out that many players routinely practice at Augusta multiple times in the lead-up to the Masters, questioning the notion that McIlroy's practice was somehow unfair.
The conversation surrounding McIlroy’s preparation was fueled by his own comments regarding the importance of spending time on the course prior to the tournament. He indicated that this dedication, especially around the greens, played a crucial role in his success. Inspired by Jack Nicklaus's philosophy of arriving early to major venues, McIlroy took the liberty to engage in an extensive practice routine at Augusta.
McIlroy expressed his connection to Augusta National, stating, “I joked last week, and going into this week, this place feels like my home course.” His practice regimen included playing with a single ball, allowing him to explore areas of the course more deeply than he had in the past.
Kisner noted that McIlroy made significant sacrifices to ensure his preparation was effective. He forfeited participation in three tournaments in Houston and San Antonio to focus solely on the Masters, foregoing valuable ranking points and financial incentives. “It was a better use of my time than competing in Houston or San Antonio,” he mentioned.
In light of the backlash directed at McIlroy for potentially over-preparing, Kisner emphasized that the access to Augusta is not exclusive to McIlroy. He explained that past champions, like Scottie Scheffler, also enjoy similar privileges, raising questions about the fairness of the current criticism directed at McIlroy.
Kisner recalled spending time with McIlroy during practice days, observing him as he played a round and shared a meal. “He played like two groups behind me,” Kisner shared, affirming that McIlroy’s approach mirrored what all competitors typically do in preparation for the Masters.
While some detractors argue that McIlroy's extensive practice gives him an unfair advantage, Kisner offered a nuanced perspective on performance. According to him, McIlroy’s overall game was perhaps not at its peak, reflecting closer to a B or B-plus, with particular struggles off the tee. Despite such challenges, he was able to secure the victory, indicating that dedication and investment in practice could have played a pivotal role in his win.
“They just can’t beat him,” Kisner concluded, highlighting how talent and commitment to the game largely outweigh any perceived advantages.
