MJ Daffue from South Africa showcased a masterclass of patience and skill at the DP World PGTI Open, ultimately securing his second title in as many months. After a thrilling final day of play, Daffue completed a bogey-free round that propelled him to victory at Classic Golf & Country Club on March 22.
Starting the day with a four-stroke lead, Daffue finished with a score of 21 under par 267 after posting a final round of 69. He edged out American Jhared Hack and India's Saptak Talwar, both of whom finished one shot behind.
"I’ve been patient… my motto has been ‘dogged, determination and patience’ and that helped me out there today," said Daffue, underlining his strategy leading up to the title. His consistent performance allowed him to rise to the top of the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings.
Daffue entered Sunday with six holes of the third round remaining. On his return to the course, he recorded a 67, bringing his total to 18 under par before starting the final round. Despite a slower beginning during round four—where he went even through the first eight holes—Daffue found his rhythm with a birdie at the ninth and later an eagle on the par-five fourteenth.
For Saptak Talwar, the day unfolded with a somewhat rocky start as he managed just seven pars and a bogey through the opening eight holes. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old golfer turned things around brilliantly, making five birdies on the last ten holes. Talwar's impressive stretch included a pivotal ten-foot birdie on the 13th that reinvigorated his momentum.
"I started off a little tentative on the first eight holes today. But I was proud of the fight I showed on the last 10 holes," Talwar remarked. Following last week's victory, he acknowledged the challenges of managing expectations. "After a win, you have to put your expectations back in check. You’ve got to reset and start from zero. That’s what I did well by putting myself in a good position after the first two rounds this week."
"The birdie on the 13th was the turning point for me today. It set me up for a good finishing stretch. Importantly, I kept the bogeys to a minimum for the second successive week," he explained, highlighting the steadiness of his game.
Jhared Hack, who had previously won the season opener, delivered a remarkable final round of 65, completing the tournament with strong play and securing his position on the merit list behind Talwar with INR 64,96,800 in earnings.
Additional standout performances included Yuvraj Sandhu, who finished in a tie for sixth place at 16 under par (71), and Ravi Kumar, who secured a tie for ninth at 15 under par (69). Both players demonstrated the growing talent in Indian golf.
The results at the DP World PGTI Open reflect not only individual talent but also the increasing competitiveness of the tournament. Talwar's continued success promises an exciting contest leading into the upcoming Indian Open, set to begin next week. Players and fans alike are eager to witness how these dynamics unfold in the growing stage of Indian golf.
