The Spanish star went bogey-free in his final round, establishing control early with a birdie on the reachable par-4 second hole before holing out for eagle on the third. His flawless finish capped what he described as a remarkable turnaround from a disappointing week at the Masters.
"If you would have told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I'd be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I would not have believed you because of how bad I played," said Rahm, who tied for 38th at Augusta National. "Hell of a an effort."
The victory comes after Rahm went winless throughout his inaugural LIV Golf season in 2024, despite claiming the league's points championship. His previous experience at Chapultepec included disappointment in 2017 when the venue hosted a World Golf Championship event.
Rahm's Legion XIII team also captured their first team victory of the year, adding to the celebration for the former world number one.
Technical difficulties plagued the early stages of the event, beginning with a power outage on Tuesday that fueled additional speculation about the tournament's viability. Streaming issues knocked the broadcast offline for two hours during Thursday's opening round.
The chaos culminated with Bryson DeChambeau's withdrawal before the final round due to wrist discomfort. The former U.S. Open champion was attempting to become the first player to win three consecutive LIV Golf events but found himself 16 shots behind Rahm when he made the decision to pull out.
"I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday's round and have decided to withdraw from the the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury," DeChambeau wrote on social media. "Not how I wanted this week to go."
DeChambeau indicated he would seek medical evaluation and expressed hope to compete at LIV Golf Virginia from May 7-10, which takes place the week before the PGA Championship.
Spaniard David Puig emerged as the runner-up with a final-round 66, earning valuable world ranking points that virtually guarantee his spot in the upcoming PGA Championship. Puig's strong position in the rankings means another solid performance in Virginia could potentially secure him entry into the U.S. Open.
Rahm's dominant victory demonstrates his continued adaptation to the LIV Golf format after making the high-profile switch from the PGA Tour. His ability to bounce back from Masters disappointment with such authority reinforces his status as one of the circuit's premier attractions.
