Rory McIlroy was recognized at the Laureus Awards in Madrid on Monday, receiving the prestigious Comeback of the Year award. This honor follows his remarkable triumph at the Masters, where he clinched his second consecutive Green Jacket earlier this month.
The Northern Irish golfer emphasized the significance of the award, describing it as a "huge honour" for both himself and the sport of golf. Winning the distinguished accolade put him alongside notable athletes while highlighting golf on an international stage.
"Winning my second Laureus Award is a huge honour, both personally and for golf. To have the sport recognised on a global stage like this, alongside so many great athletes, means a lot," McIlroy said. He successfully defended his title, winning the Masters for a second time after first achieving this feat in April 2025.
His journey to this prestigious recognition was remarkable, as he became only the sixth player in history to complete a career Grand Slam following his initial victory at Augusta. McIlroy's win last year came after an intense sudden-death playoff against Justin Rose, solidifying his legacy in the sport.
Reflecting on his accomplishments, McIlroy stated, "There are certain moments in your career that stay with you, and winning The Masters is one I'll carry with me forever." The golfer acknowledged that such recognition by Laureus is particularly special.
Completing the career Grand Slam has emotional significance for McIlroy, who expressed gratitude for the journey he undertook to achieve this goal. "Completing the career Grand Slam was incredibly emotional. It's something I've been chasing for a long time, and it probably means more because of everything that came before it - the near misses, the setbacks, and the questions along the way," he shared.

McIlroy also expressed a personal connection to the award by mentioning its founder, Johann Rupert, reinforcing his strong belief in the Laureus mission influenced by Nelson Mandela's words about the power of sport to change the world.
This year’s Masters saw McIlroy joining elite ranks, becoming just the fourth player ever to win back-to-back Green Jackets, an achievement only matched by golfing legends Sir Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, and Jack Nicklaus. Despite facing stiff competition from world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and others, McIlroy managed to finish with a commendable score of 12 under-par.
"I can't believe I waited 17 years to get one Green Jacket and now I've got two in a row. It’s just sort of the way it goes," he said, illustrating his long pursuit of success at Augusta. The golfer added, "I think all my perseverance at this golf tournament over the years has really started to pay off. It was a tough weekend, I did the bulk of my work on Thursday and Friday, but just so so happy to hang in and get the job done."
