SAN ROQUE, Spain – In a dramatic final round at the LIV Golf Andalucía, Talor Gooch of Smash GC celebrated a return to the winner's circle for the first time this season. With a thrilling performance at the Real Club Valderrama, Gooch not only reclaimed his individual title but also showcased his resilience under pressure, defeating Spain's Jon Rahm, whose team, Legion XIII, clinched their third title of the season.
As the final round unfolded, Gooch found himself leading by four shots but recognized that the pressure was mounting. “Nothing was easy,” Gooch reflected on his Sunday performance, which included a critical approach on the 18th hole. This pivotal shot, from 210 yards, was essential in maintaining his one-shot lead. It landed softly on the back fringe, allowing him to secure a two-putt winning par. “There’s a few shots on that back nine that I’m going to never forget kind of moments,” he added. “Obviously the second shot on 18 is one of those moments.”
His caddie, Mal Baker, corroborated the significance of that shot, saying it was “the best iron shot he can remember seeing.” Gooch’s ability to thrive under pressure ultimately secured him the 2023 title, a path he embraced as part of his journey back to excellence in golf.
Meanwhile, Tom McKibbin made headlines of his own, delivering a standout performance with a 5-under 66 that showcased his potential. This result not only fueled Legion XIII's team victory but also positioned McKibbin to contend for his first individual title. Although a couple of late bogeys pushed him into a tie for fourth, the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland is showing promise as he heads into next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush. “My game has felt good for the last couple of weeks,” he stated. “To finish off well here today around a very difficult golf course gives me a lot of confidence going there.”
Jon Rahm expressed admiration for the rising star, saying, “Tom has got one of the prettier swings on this planet...his composure, his awareness on the course, he's a champion as it is. He’s close to getting a big one at some point.” Clearly, the future looks bright for McKibbin as he builds on his impressive performances.
In another impressive showing, Abraham Ancer of Fireballs GC secured a solo third with a bogey-free 66. Starting strong with three birdies in his first five holes, Ancer continues to demonstrate significant growth, moving up to ninth in the season-long Individual points standings. Earlier this year, he tied for second in Adelaide as part of a winning effort, and now his performance at Valderrama has set him up for further successes.
In terms of pressure points, Ripper GC’s Matt Jones and Stinger GC’s Branden Grace also made significant strides in their LIV Golf standings. Both players started the event near the bottom, but both turned in stellar final rounds, with Jones matching Rahm's score for the lowest of the day at 65, while Grace shot a solid 69. Their performances, earning them a tie for fourth place, seem to solidify their places in the league as they continue to avoid relegation.
Reflecting on his journey, Grace noted the challenges he faced, especially battling a wrist injury that may require surgery. “It's been a tough two years,” he remarked. “It’s been a hard grind. But I’ve never given up. The team has had my back...it means a lot for them to see me playing good.” These sentiments echo the camaraderie and support that underpin the LIV Golf circuit.
As the competition wraps up in Andalucía, the focus now shifts to the upcoming events. With Gooch's return to form and McKibbin's impressive debut, along with notable performances from Ancer, Jones, and Grace, the stage is set for an electrifying season.
The implications of this tournament extend beyond individual titles, affecting team dynamics and player rankings. As the LIV Golf season progresses, players are keenly aware of the challenges that lie ahead, and last weekend’s competition underscored the importance of resilience and teamwork in navigating those twists and turns.
